Team Movistar Yamaha’s Valencia Track Map with Speed and Gear Telemetry shows one use of sixth gear and three first gear corners. Notice the long section using only second gear after Turn 2. After Turn 6 the Yamaha riders get briefly up to fifth gear at Turn 7, but given the time they spend in third and fourth one wonders why they bother getting up to fifth gear at all just to move so quickly back down to second gear for Turn 8.

After downshifting to second gear for Turn 12, the riders quick shift past third to take the signature Turn 13 in fourth gear. This is an interesting bit to me as I’ve always figured the riders used third gear here. I’ve stood at the top of the hill at Turn 13 many times for this shot:

The top riders spin the rear tire coming through this turn as they slide, so perhaps this is more effectively done in a gear lower than third.

Yamaha reports 301.0 km/p on the straight, but Ducati lists the circuit Top Speed as 332.4 km/h (206.5 mph) by Cal Crutchlow (Ducati), 2014.

Thanks again to Yamaha for providing this series of maps with telemetry.
