Some days…
…you just want to do your job without anyone taking your picture.
That’s one of the possible explanations I’ve come up with to accompany this image. I was surprised when I saw the look on this mechanic’s face, as I haven’t any reason to think it’s directed at me personally, or even at me as a familiar but unknown photographer in pit lane.
MotoGP mechanics seem nearly as accustomed to the presence of photographers as the riders are. So why this look would be directed toward my camera is a mystery. It’s possible, perhaps likely, that it has nothing to do with the act of photography at all but is just a coincidence, some other thought lingering on this guy’s face at the moment of the exposure.
While mechanics in general might prefer a working environment in which there were no photographers, I believe they understand the reasons for having us there and accept our presence. Honda mechanics in particular are professional above all things, and also accustomed to the attention that comes along with working with a star rider.
Whatever the explanation, it’s a dramatic photograph, the kind of image you sometimes get when you least expect it.
