The say the camera doesn’t lie, but perhaps this seemingly tender moment is not quite what it seems at first glance. And yet it brings so many quotations to mind!

Photographs succeed best when, in a single image, they tell a story. This one tells so much about the 2014 season, doesn’t it? Consider the history between these two riders.

The upstart Lorenzo arriving at Yamaha as Rossi is on top, making it clear that Rossi’s newest threat was on the same bike, in the same garage, sharing the same data. The subsequent division of that sharing.

Rossi’s move to Ducati as Yamaha put their eggs in the basket labeled “Lorenzo.” Rossi’s return to Yamaha as Lorenzo began his second premier title defense, only for both to learn that the threat to their success lay with Marc Marquez.

After all that, the big brother figure puts a gentle hand on the younger’s shoulder as Marquez wins his tenth race of the season. It’s beautiful, man!
