The Audi R10 TDI was a remarkable race car, and the first time I saw it with my own eyes, it was my ears that were the most amazed.

I figured the diesel engine would produce a unique sound, but relative to the petrol-burning engines sharing the track, the R10’s TDI engine was nearly silent. It made only a low growl as it passed, even under full acceleration.

The above image is from the paddock staging area where the cars were lined up to enter pit lane. Neither of the official drivers, Rockefeller or Werner, performed this task. It was given to one of the mechanics, who caught my eye for his stylish Oakley Overthetop shades.

I wonder if he still has them, as these specs now go for hundreds of dollars on eBay.
