If you saw the images of our previous Guest Shooter, you may have noticed that we are presenting two set of images from the same MotoGP weekend, the 2014 Grand Prix of Catalunya. Rather than being an oversight, this is intentional for the following reason. While both Mark Sherman and Dean White attended this event as spectators and avid amateur photographers, each had the same access to the fan areas of the circuit, and each used comparable equipment, each came away with different images for the weekend. While some of one shooter’s images are similar to the other’s, most are uniquely those of the individual. My point, again, is that the person operating the camera makes more difference than any other element.

Dean White describes himself as a motorcyclist first and foremost, and one who simply liked looking at motorcycle photographs in books and magazines until at some point he fancied a try at it himself.

As with many non-professionals, his gear isn’t particularly complex. He uses a modest Canon 50D and a Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L telephoto zoom lens. Also as with many non-pros, he longs for something more sophisticated, perhaps a 5D MkIII. But the 50D suits him just fine most of the time.

Dean has been traveling to Grand Prix races and photographing them since his school days. He feels he has improved since his early attempts in the 1980s. He has been to the European rounds as well as Phillip Island. Brno, Catalunya, and Mugello are his favorites. His home round, Silverstone, not as much.

At the Circuit of Barcelona he was shooting over, around, and sometime through the fences, with (in his words) varying degrees of success.
