It’s no coincidence that my favorite race tracks are built on top of hills, and my least favorite are flat as pancakes.

Elevation changes not only create more interesting situations on track, but they also allow for shots like this. What a lovely image by Cormac!

Please take a moment to notice what’s not there in the background. There are no: porta-potties, cones, trucks, cars, fences, marshals in bright orange jackets, marshals in bright yellow jackets, snack stands, vendor booths, fans with their shirts off and beer bellies shining moistly in the sun, fans holding unfortunate signs, fans looking utterly bored, large concrete buildings that look like prisons rather than race tracks… I could go on, but you get the idea.

If there’s a hill, you can go to the bottom and look up to see a wonderful background like blue sky and clouds to isolate the subject of your image and make him look like he’s about to fly into the distance on a massive stand up wheelie. Sweet.
