Ever get the feeling that most MotoGP photography looks sort of the same? I certainly feel that way about my own images, or most of them anyway. I’m constantly looking for new ideas when I’m at a race, and only rarely do I come up with something that I feel looks new and fresh.

But when I see an image like this, frankly it’s a humbling experience. When I first saw it, literally moments before writing what you’re reading right now in fact, it took me a moment to understand what I was looking at. I thought I was seeing train tracks or something that made no sense for a motorcycle racing photograph.

When I noticed the MotoGP bikes in the light, framed so nicely by the dark grandstands, I had one of those Aha moments. Once again I realized I’d just been taught something by Dan Lo.

One of my favorite things about his photographs is how he makes the most of what he has to work with. Unjustly (based on the quality of his work), he doesn’t always have a credential when he attends a MotoGP race. So sometimes he must find interesting images from the same places other spectators are standing (or sitting!).

While Dan creates really nice images of a more traditional look, such as this one of John McGuinness at the TT, and can certainly capture telling moments such as this one between Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, for me it’s really Dan’s eye from afar that defines his style.

Consider this one of Marc Marquez at IMS, where Marquez is a tiny piece of focussed speed in a wash of IMS’ tarmac and concrete. Or this image of Scott Redding where he seems to be pushing the Bridgestone tires to new limits of grip due to the extreme angle of image rotation. Or this fan favorite from CotA, fantastic.

As long as Dan keeps contributing his MotoGP Photography to Photo.GP, I will be pleased to share his work with you.
