Yamaha telemetry map Assen

The latest Yamaha track map with speed and gear selection telemetry is for this weekend’s race at Assen.

Considered by many to be one of the finest motorcycle racing layouts on the MotoGP Calendar, the TT Circuit at Assen has one 1st gear corner at one extreme and only two brief 6th gear sections at the other. In-between are flowing turns taken in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, with several good passing opportunities in 2nd.

This map barely indicates the Veenslang turn where, according to the map, the Yamaha riders get to 288.2 Km/h after a quick moment in 6th gear. This section of track is one of my favorites to stand at and simply watch, listen, and feel MotoGP bikes go by. It’s a breathtaking combination of acceleration, speed, and turning with a light touch of the brakes that is 100 times more exciting than watching these bikes go fast in a perfectly straight line.

There are many really exciting turns at this circuit, even though it manages to have very little, if any, elevation change. It’s certainly the very best flat road circuit I’ve ever been to, and the time the bikes spend turning in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear helps explain that.

The chicane before the short run to the finish line doesn’t hurt, either, as personally I would rather see a close race decided in the final corner than by a slipstream pass via a long run to the finish.

Thanks again to Yamaha for providing these telemetry maps!
