BSB Knockhill 2015
The final turn is a sharp hairpin, steeply uphill, and site of much passing and some controversy during the races. This is 17-year old Kyle Ryde on the yellow Yamaha, former Red Bull Rookie (2011-12) and one of the fast guys in the Supersport class. On Sunday he showed some stout courage on track with his passes. He looks like the real deal and someone to watch for the future of British racing.
BSB is also chock full of experienced riders, and Michael Laverty fought hard for a podium in the first Superbike race. Toward the end of Race 1, at the hairpin he stuck his BMW up the inside of Josh Brookes. But it was under a yellow flag from a crash that had happened a moment before, and Laverty was given a penalty that relived him of the podium result.
BSB has a good mix of manufacturers involved, including Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph and more. And you gotta love it when a rider is beautifully color coordinated with his Alpinestars outfit and Milwaukee Yamaha livery, as Broc Parkes is here.
This was the first time I’d seen Jenny Tinmouth on track. She rode hard but didn’t quite have the pace of the leaders.
After a couple of years of watching the PBM MotoGP bikes ride around at the back, I found it a bit odd to see the PBM BSB bikes at the front. But Shane Byrne was on good form as the most successful BSB rider ever, and his teammate, Stuart Easton, was also fighting at the front.
Shakey took double honors in the Superbike races, in spite of the second race being stopped for rain and restarted as a sprint.
It was a large crowd for a small circuit with crap weather, and the people watching was pretty good as well, especially when the sun peeked out.
The U.K. branch of our international motorcycle racing community is very lucky to have a top rate national series. It turns out that BSB Series and Race Director Stuart Higgs is also involved in revitalizing the AMA series in the U.S. After my visit to Knockhill, I’m hopeful that he can help get the AMA up to BSB standards. We’ll all be the better for it.
