MotoGP Winglets War!
At Sachsenring we saw a dramatic new design:
Notice the longer structure with the vent near the back.
Another view of this vented wing from Silverstone:
Rear view of the vented winglet:
At Silverstone we also got to see what’s beneath the carbon fiber:
At Misano things changed when Yamaha joined the winglet party after decades of winglessness. But rather than copying Ducati’s wing location, Yamaha placed their winglet higher and more toward the front of the fairing. At Phillip Island Yamaha was still using the same design/location:
Rather than being secured on the inside of the fairing, the Yamaha winglet is riveted on:
While Yamaha had not copied Ducati’s winglet position, Ducati decided both to stick with its original idea AND incorporate Yamaha’s location, creating the dual wing configuration.
We also saw how winglets can be removed from the Ducati fairings and tape used to cover the winglet joint openings.
Notice the white tape covering the fairing where the lower winglet would be installed.
As of Phillip Island Yamaha was offering its riders the winglets though only Lorenzo used them in the race. Both Iannone and Dovizioso used the dual Ducati winglets on Sunday. We will look to see what options each factory offers its riders in the remaining two races, and then what becomes of the winglet strategy at the Valencia test when the season is over.
