WSBK Laguna Seca: Saturday
The WSBK Laguna Seca round saw beautiful weather on Saturday, though as I prepare to publish this on Sunday morning I’m sitting in a rain soaked media center with thunder continuing to boom in the distance. Whether we’ll have wet or dry racing later in the day remains to be seen. But yesterday was lovely.
Above, Aprilia rider Jordi Torres put his RSV4 RF on the front row in third position, then had the crowd wrapped around his finger in the post Superpole chat in the paddock. I’m really glad to see he has landed on a competitive team after he left Moto2, where he was always good for a flamboyant wheelie and a warm smile. Torres comes into the weekend in fifth place in the championship, ahead of reigning champ Sylvain Guintoli but quite a way back from the leader, Jonathan Rea.
Chaz Davies claimed pole position in what is still one of my favorite helmet designs from Starline Designers.
Davide Giugliano will start from second behind his Arubi.it Ducati teammate in spite of having a hot lap interfered with. Italian is a very expressive language complimented by physical gestures that often render actual words unnecessary.
Sylvain Guintoli managed ninth on the Honda, possibly wishing he were still on the Aprilia with which he won the title last season.
Jonathan Rea will start from fifth position.
Michael van der Mark is here for the first time and finished Superpole 1 back in fifth place. Laguna Seca is not a track at which most riders can show up and start going fast right away.
Tom Sykes definitely knows his way around, having won here before. He’ll start from fourth place.
Niccolo Canepa leaves some rubber around Turn 3 on the way to a seventh place spot on the grid.
Alex Lowes will start from eighth.
David Salom skipped Superpole 1 but was then demoted to 11th place in Superpole 2 by…
…Leon Camier, who cuts a striking figure in those MV Agusta-themed leathers. It has been some time since the legendary brand won a world title, but there’s a lot of history behind those World Championship stripes on Camier’s sleeves.
