UPDATE: No more submissions, please, and a huge thank you to everyone who responded.

I have added my own version at the end. This is the version I created before I posted this article, and thus it has not been influenced by anything sent in by readers. I can’t say, however, that I would do it exactly the same way now, having seen some of the ideas below…

Welcome to Raw Challenge #6.

If you’re not sure what’s going on here, you might take a look at the previous PhotoGP Raw Challenges.

Intended to go along with the other articles in our photography tips section, the PhotoGP Raw Challenge invites you to process an image as you think best.

This time we’re working with an image from last weekend’s WSBK race at Laguna Seca. Tom Sykes leads teammate Jonathan Rea into Turn 5. There are several elements to work with as this photo’s editor; a strong vertical line of the blue and white curb, the horizontal shadow of the pedestrian bridge, black tire marks on the tarmac, and of course the race between the two Kawasaki riders.

I have posted his original raw file for download by anyone who wants to play along. To download the raw file, click on the link below. WARNING: this zipped file is 14.9MB:

You will need a raw image file editor, I use Adobe Lightroom. If you don’t have the ability to edit a raw file, you can still play along with any app that can edit a JPG file. The hi-res JPG file (3.5MB) can be be found here:

As before, download whichever file you desire and get to work. Crop, adjust contrast, brightness, saturation, shadows, highlights, white balance, add noise, remove noise, remove dust spots, do whatever you think the image needs to be as good as you can make it.

1. Download either the raw file or the jpg.

2. Make your edits and SAVE AS a jpg file, 728 pixels wide.

3. Include YOUR NAME in your processed file’s name. You are welcomed to include a text file with any remarks you’d like me to add when I post your edited file, or you can put them in the Comments section of this post.

4. Send your file to me via this link.

I will add contributed images to this post as quickly as I’m able. But please keep in mind that I am also doing other things, and there may be a delay between sending your email and your image showing up here.

As before, I have finished my own version and will post it as the final image.

Have fun!

Reader Edited Versions:

Reader version #1 comes from Bill Nuttall:

#2 comes from Andreas Weinand, who adds these comments: I applied one of my “signature”-developments on your photo and cropped / rotated it. Massive + on clarity, a bit + on contrast, massive – on saturation – thou, in this case, I kept the green more saturated.

Brian McEwan sent in #3:

#4 is from Ronny Lekl in Germany: I edit the pic (jpeg) only in ACDSee Pro 7. I crop the pic to put the curbs near to the middle of the pic. Some adjustments with the colors, brightness…. and Tilt-Shift. Thats it.
