raw challenge #3

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who contributed an edit this time. Once again, very interesting versions! NO MORE SUBMISSIONS PLEASE. Watch for the next Raw Challenge at PHOTO.GP

If you’re not sure what’s going on here, you might take a look at the previous PhotoGP Raw Challenges.

This time you have a selection of similar images to consider. Instead of a single raw file to work with, you must choose among the six provided files and create ONE version to contribute to the collection of edited images.

While all images are similar, created within eight seconds of each other, each shows a different expression on Cal Crutchlow’s face.

You are invited to pretend you were standing where I was, captured this selection of images, and now must choose the best one to tell your version of the story of this moment.

You may download all of the images in order to see them more closely, though you may wish to do this with the JPGs as they are much smaller. You can also click on the image above for a larger version to preview the choices.

You may experiment with any number of the images, but please only send ONE in. If you send more than one I will pick the single image I like best and show it below. So please save me that decision and send only the one you like best.

I have posted the original raw files for download by anyone who wants to play along. To download the raw files, click on the desired one below. WARNING: these files are around 16MB EACH.

You will need a raw image file editor, I use Adobe Lightroom. If you don’t have the ability to edit a raw file, you can still play along with any app that can edit a JPG file. The hi-res JPG files can be be found here:

As before, download whichever file(s) you desire and get to work. Crop, adjust contrast, brightness, saturation, shadows, highlights, white balance, add noise, remove noise, remove dust spots, do whatever you think the image needs to be as good as you can make it.

1. Download either the raw file(s) or the jpg(s).

2. Make your edits and SAVE AS a jpg file, 728 pixels wide.

3. Use YOUR NAME as your file’s name. You are welcomed to include a text file with any remarks you’d like me to add when I post your edited file (OR you can put them in the Comments section of this post). Please name the text file similarly to the jpg so I know which goes with which.

4. Send your file to me via this link.

I will add contributed images to this post as quickly as I’m able. But please keep in mind that I am also doing other things, and there may be a delay between uploading your folder and your image showing up here.

We’ll give this a few days to run and see what happens.

Edited images begin on the next page:

I like Jensen’s version a lot. In hindsight I might have gone for this pic, The furrowed brow and the eyeball detail really pops out.

#4 makes me think Cal is saying “oh my!” in a very proper English voice.
