I’m extremely pleased to be here in Barcelona to photograph the 2014 Superprestigio.
If you missed last year’s event, it was action packed as road racers and flat trackers met up in a just for fun battle royale. Recently-crowned MotoGP champion Marc Marquez brought plenty of publicity and interest to the event, especially since US AMA flat track champion Brad Baker was invited.
The two of the were the class of the field and in the final race, they left the others behind. There was rubbin’ and racin’ galore, and opinions vary of the final rub that resulted in Marquez falling a few laps from the end. See for yourself: a video of the final is here.
This year, Baker is back to defend his title, but so is the current AMA champion, Jared Mees. Many other riders could have a say in the outcome, as top riders from all around the world have been invited to race in the three classes. There’s even a female rider, young Shayna Texter is mixing it up with some pretty fast company.
It’s oddly enjoyable see so many familiar faces from the MotoGP paddock dressed in their dirt clothes to slide these knobby tired machines around. But it’s not merely riders who are here from the MotoGP world. I spoke today with Dorna’s TV director, Sergi Sendra, who was practically twitching with excitement as he told me about all the gear they are planning to strap to bikes and riders. The coverage this year is going to be amazing AND it’ll stream LIVE, MotoGP-style, thanks to our friends at Cycle World. Be sure to tune in at 9AM PST.
