A friend and I ran across this image recently and he asked what the symbols on the pipe meant. They don’t look like the typical exhaust pipe maker’s logo, after all. After explaining their significance, I thought this might make an amusing post.
Certainly many of you will know right away what those symbols refer to, or rather, to whom they refer. But as younger generations of fans come to motorcycle racing, and indeed come to this sport from all parts of the earth, certainly some people have no idea how important these symbols are in the history of motorbike racing.
But for many fans of a certain manufacturer, these symbols are synonymous with title after title…
To many motorbike folks, these stylized and iconic Japanese characters bring Pops Yoshimura instantly to mind.
Pops Yoshimura’s contributions to motorcycle racing began in 1954 and continue to this day as Yoshimura R&D continues to make high performance and race parts, mainly for Suzuki machines.
In 2008 the ‘Yosh’ logo appeared on the factory Suzuki MotoGP bikes’ exhaust pipes. Suzuki’s development of their 2015 MotoGP has shown a variety of exhaust pipe designs being tested at Catalunya, Valencia and Sepang. Will the Yosh logo appear on the pipe in Qatar? I will be looking to see…
