After two days of Moto2 testing at Jerez, Sam Lowes (shown above at Silverstone, 2014) put his Speed Up bike into top place with a 1:42.362. Lowes was ahead of Luis Salom (1:42.484) and Johann Zarco (1:42.559), and was the only rider in the top 15 on Wednesday NOT riding a Kalex chassis.
Lowes’ Wednesday time was under the current Moto2 pole position record, so this bodes well for the 2015 season. Lowes had a rough time in 2014, and it’s really encouraging to see a British rider atop the time sheet, even if it is only testing.
Earlier today, Frenchman Johann Zarco stole the top spot with a super-fast 1:42.121, and Lowes managed to improve on his Wednesday time for a 2nd place 1:42.165.
How well is Lowes doing on the Speed up? His fellow Speed Up riders, Ant West and Julian Simon, were in 21st (1:43.849) and 22nd (1:43.936) respectively, putting Lowes over a second and a half ahead of each of these experienced riders.
Considering the history of British motorbike racers, it’s really good to see a young British rider going well among the surplus of quick Spanish riders currently in all three GP classes.
Speaking of young Spanish riders, Moto2 rookie Alex Rins was 9th on Wednesday (1:43.347), and 9th again today (1:42.927).
