Marc Marquez carried momentum gained at Sachsenring over the summer break by claiming pole position with a time of 1’31.884, just slightly slower than his pole record set last year of 1’31.619.
Cal Crutchlow claimed fourth place on the grid amid rumors that he might return to Ducati next season aboard a factory supported GP16 with the Pramac team.
Bradley Smith once again took the Tech 3 honors away from teammate Pol Espargaro (1’32.670) with a 1’32.269 that was good enough for sixth place on the grid.
Valentino Rossi is the third fastest Yamaha on the grid, his 1’32.511 putting him in eighth place. With his teammate in 3rd and the Hondas being fast at IMS, Rossi will have his work cut out for him to claim a podium.
Jack Miller went around in 1’33.381 which was good enough for 16th, his best qualifying so far in his rookie season in the premier class.
Stefan Bradl went well on his first qualifying session on the Aprilia, having replaced Marco Melandri for the remainder of the 2015 season. His 1’33.822 put him just behind Miller and one spot in front of teammate Alvaro Bautista, who suddenly has some competition inside the Aprilia team.
Amid talk that this may be his final GP on American soil, Nicky Hayden struggled with set up and managed only 20th on the grid, one spot behind his teammate, Eugene Laverty.
