IMS Track Map with Speed and Gear Telemetry
The IMS track map with Yamaha’s speed and gear telemetry overlay surprised me a bit by showing that the infield section after the first turn is done entirely in 1st gear. I figured that T4 would be one of the turns most likely to use 1st gear of all of the MotoGP circuits, but expected the bikes would approach in 2nd. Perhaps this shows, again, how the perspective from trackside can be misleading.
I’m really surprised that the final section before the long straight is taken in 1st, and again, I’m not 100% confident the shift points on these maps are entirely accurate. Why the Yamaha riders would shift down to 1st immediately after T14, and at 155.0 kph (96.3 mph), then approach T15 without getting a bit more use out of 2nd seems a bit suspect, but just because that’s not how I’d expect to do it on a road bike doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way to get a MotoGP bike around.
Yamaha indicates 300.8 kph near the start of braking on the straight. The Ducati pre-IMS press release lists the record MotoGP top speed at this track as 345.7 kph (214.8 mph), thanks to the efforts of Andrea Dovizioso last year. The Circuit Record (1’32.831 at 161.7 kph) and Fastest Lap (1’31.619 at 163.8 kph) are both from Marc Marquez, also in 2014.
