Visual Storytelling – Crop To Find Your Tale

Posted on 14 May, 2016 by Scott Jones

A new PhotoGP photography video is now playing on YouTube, with the extended, 1080p version available to my Patreon supporters.

Instead of reconstructing a photo, in this episode I construct one from scratch. After a Patreon supporter asked me to take a look at his photos, I thought that, while pretty darned good, they could be improved by the photographer using his editing tools to direct the viewer’s attention.

To do this, one needs to give some thought to visual storytelling, id est having a clear idea what a given photo is really about, what story it’s telling. Cropping is a great way to do this.

So this video focusses mainly on how I crop the above Jorge Lorenzo image to tell the story I want to tell.

If you enjoy photography videos, please subscribe to my YouTube channel or even better, support me on Patreon and the the extended videos in 1080p!
